Theta II Engine Issues (Shared with Hyundai)
The Kia Theta II GDI engine (2.0T and 2.4L) shares the same manufacturing defect as Hyundai's version — metal contaminants in engine oil leading to bearing damage and potential engine seizure. Affected models include the Sorento, Sportage, and Optima from 2011–2019. Kia extended the engine warranty on many affected vehicles, but used buyers may fall outside that window.
Factory Warranty Gap for Used Buyers
Like Hyundai, Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty only applies to the original owner. Used buyers receive 5 years/60,000 miles from the original sale date. On a 6-year-old Kia, used buyers may have no factory powertrain coverage at all — making a third-party warranty critical.
