Best Extended Warranty for Kia

Kia shares the Theta II engine platform with Hyundai — and the same post-warranty risks. Newer models are excellent, but the factory warranty doesn't fully protect used buyers. Here's what Kia owners need to know.

Kia Sorento

Midsize SUV — Theta II engine concerns on 2012–2019 models worth covering

Kia Sportage

Compact SUV — Theta II engine on 2011–2019 models; newer versions are reliable

Kia Telluride

3-row midsize SUV — top-rated reliability; electronics and AWD coverage worth having

Kia Reliability Notes

Post-warranty repair patterns across Kia's lineup — what to watch for.

Theta II Engine Issues (Shared with Hyundai)

The Kia Theta II GDI engine (2.0T and 2.4L) shares the same manufacturing defect as Hyundai's version — metal contaminants in engine oil leading to bearing damage and potential engine seizure. Affected models include the Sorento, Sportage, and Optima from 2011–2019. Kia extended the engine warranty on many affected vehicles, but used buyers may fall outside that window.

Factory Warranty Gap for Used Buyers

Like Hyundai, Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty only applies to the original owner. Used buyers receive 5 years/60,000 miles from the original sale date. On a 6-year-old Kia, used buyers may have no factory powertrain coverage at all — making a third-party warranty critical.

Telluride and Newer Models: Strong Reliability

The 2020+ Kia Telluride, K5, and Carnival are among the most reliable vehicles in their segments. These newer models use updated engines and have a strong initial quality record. Post-warranty concerns shift to infotainment and driver assistance electronics.

Electronics and Advanced Driver Assistance

Kia's DriveWise driver assistance suite and connected car technology are featured across the lineup. Camera, radar, and module failures become more common after the factory warranty — covered under Athena's Deluxe and New Car Coverage tiers.

Kia's Factory Warranty: What You Start With

Bumper-to-Bumper (New)

5 years / 60,000 miles

Covers most defects — applies to original owner only.

Powertrain (Original Owner)

10 years / 100,000 miles

Kia's industry-leading warranty for first owners only.

Powertrain (Used Buyers)

5 years / 60,000 miles from sale date

Significantly reduced for used car buyers — often already expired.

Rust (Perforation)

7 years (unlimited miles)

Body panel rust-through protection.
